It is the second time today these 2 teams meet in League play. The first game played at Peninsula was a one sided affair with the Mustangs beating Peninsula 3:0. From the opening minutes Mira Costa putting pressure on the Peninsula Panthers. But not all passes are on today, concentration is missing and the Mustangs make it harder on themselves then necessary. In the 13th minute the first good chance for Costa with a break away by Michaila Franklin of a pass by Viv Villacorta but the finishing shot not placed well enough. Just 30 seconds later the 1:0 lead for Peninsula, a long ball kicked in front of the Costa goal somehow bounces over the goalie into the net. In the 16th minute then a hard shot from 20 yards by Kendall Douglas and a good save by the Peninsula goalie. Next good chance for the Mustangs in the 31st minute with a shot by Viviana Villacorta that just goes wide.
After half time the Mustangs continue to have most of the ball possession but are not creating real chances in front of the Panthers goal. An unusual large number of bad and inaccurate passes in the Costa game makes it easy for the Peninsula defense to hold on to the lead. Different so then in the 15th minute with a fast pass from Michaila franklin in mid to Whitney Davis on the right. Her shot from 10 yards is deflected by a Panthers defender for an own goal. The Mustangs now with more of an urgency and some good scoring opportunities but we had to wait until the last minute of the game to see another goal. Senior Kendall Douglas scores on a penalty given for a hand ball in the box. A big relieve for the Costa bench after a game with ups and downs. The Mustangs will have 2 more home games against Inglewood and Morningside and the last league game vs Redondo next Thursday. The team needs to beat Redondo for a good placement in the CIF play offs. Hopefully Costa finds again the rhythm and harmony it had earlier in the season when the Mustangs beat the Seahawks convincingly in the South Bay Tournament.
