Traveling to Peninsula High in their second league game, the Mira Costa Mustangs began their warm up a little more tense then usual. Starting the week as the top seeded team in the CIF SS Rankings was a reflection of great pre season play. Then a loss in the league opener on Tuesday and the Mustangs find themselves in unknown territory by loosing their first game in regular playing time since February 2015. But despite doubts and a crappy field Costa took control of the game from the first minute on. Setting the tone early by pressing the Peninsula Panthers high, controlling the pace of the game while initiating one attack after the other. In the 6 minute the first warning shot by Junior Emelie Flaig hits the post. Next play great pass by Delaney Whittet to Emelie Flaig and a through ball to Whitney Davis but a close off site call on that one. Then in the 23. minute play of the game, Kennedi McCarroll ran out the back and made a pass to Viviana Villacorta. Quick turn, a move away from pressure and a pinpoint pass to an alert Emelie Flaig followed by a left footed finish in the upper corner. Next goal, a dangerous 40 yard free kick by Olivia Vega in front of the Panthers goal, Senior defender Caroline Keever reacts first to a loose ball and scores her first goal of the season(32.) The halftime score is 2:0 for Costa. The Mustangs clearly dominate the first half while the Panthers have no answer just trying to interrupt the flow of the game with a lot of unnecessary fouls. 9. minute of the second half Whitney Davis is taken down in the penalty box. Viviana Villacorta takes the ball and finishes without hesitation to make the game 3:0. For the rest of the game it was Costa moderately managing the game and rotating every player onto the pitch. There were 2 more chances in this game, first Ruby Hill with a good shot that barely missed the left upper corner of the net and Michaila Franklin’s shot just clear over the cross bar. On the other side of the field a quiet day for the Mustang goalie’s. The Panthers did not account for one shot on goal today.
