47a6df10b3127cce9854c3ed968100000033102AZMm7Vq5bM-January 29, 2016 – The Palos Verdes Seakings hosted the Mira Costa Mustangs in a rivalry game Friday afternoon that turned into a classic battle well into extra time. Two teams stepping on the field that play a totally different style of football. The Mustangs with a fast and technical possession kind of play while the Seakings prefer to feed their fast forwards with long balls over the top. Costa coming off a tough loss this week against Redondo Beach in need of a good result and what a start they had. A through ball by Hanna Watkins finds an alert Michaila Franklin and she slices it past the P.V. goalie to make it 1:0 early in the game. Both teams were not holding back today which resulted in an abundance of chances on both sides of the field. The Mustangs with the faster and prettier to look at combination play answered by the Seakings with very aggressive marching orders, a lot of foul play but also always ready and dangerous in break away situations. Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Raventos protected the lead for the Mustangs with some outstanding saves on a couple of occasions. No chance so for Nicole to save a well placed header of a corner kick in the 40th minute an the game is tied at half time.
An injured Nicole Raventos had to sit out at the restart, so did Gen Watkins already earlier in the game with a wrist injury. But Michaila Franklin was back after limping off in the first half taking a couple of hard hits. Despite being played overly aggressive the game kept to be entertaining. A lot of chances were created on both sides, here are the most memorable ones. In the 6th minute save by Jordan Martin after a break away by PV’s number 20. In the 19th minute pass by Emelie Flaig to Hanna Watkins, her cross from the goal line finds Michaila Franklin and her shot just wide. 26 minute nice turn by Delaney Whittet placing the ball just over the crossbar. In the 31 minute the Costa bench holds their breath after a break away by a PV forward, the shot passes a charging Jordan Martin and misses the goal by inches. In the 34 minute a questionable indirect free kick for PV inside the box followed by another spectacular save by senior goalie Jordan Martin. After a short break the game goes into 20 minutes of extra time. In the 6th minute a shot by Viviana Villacorta barely missing the far corner. Just minutes later two more shots by Viv, one saved by the post, the other by the goalie. The Mustangs at this stage all over a tired looking PV team. Attack after attack rolls towards the PV goal but the ball doesn’t want to find the back of the net. This never boring rivalry ends 1:1 after 100 exciting minutes of playing time.

The next game for the Mustangs is Tuesday at home against Peninsula, 3 pm Waller Stadium.  It is also Senior Recognition Day, there will be a special ceremony prior to the game honoring the graduating players from Costa and Peninsula.
