For the first game of the year Mira Costa hosted Bishop Montgomery for a friendly at Waller Stadium. After a two and half week break without practice the girls looked a little rusty and off through out the first half. So in the 8th minute, a soft back pass to goalie Jordan Martin that is intercepted by one of Bishop’s forwards and Costa is trailing 1:0. After this early wake up call it didn’t take the Mustangs long to regroup and strike back. Nice pass from Viviana Villacorta to Emelie Flaig, she takes the ball into the box and finishes with a left footer in the far right corner. What followed was a lot of ball possession by the Mustangs throughout the first half but they didn’t really create any good scoring opportunities. An exception in the 33rd minute , corner kick from Emmie Farber finds Michaila Franklin for a header but an easy save by the Bishop goalie. The teams switch sides with the score standing at 1:1.
In the second half then a more determined Mira Costa team. The girls created more chances and it was just a matter of time until they scored again.
Here the high lights of the second half. A run by Hanna Watkins through midfield with a nice flick to Emelie Flaig , her shot just wide to the left in the 3rd minute. In the 8th minute a cross by Emelie Flaig from the right side that almost crosses the goal line. In the 10th minute a 20 yard free kick by Hanna Watkins just over the cross bar. 32 minute pass from midfield to Delaney Whittet, a couple of quick moves and a nice shot in the right corner, 2:1 for Mira Costa. In the 40th minute pass by Viv Villacorta to Michaila Franklin, her shot hits of the post and Emmie Farber almost scores on the rebound. In the 41st minute a shot by Olivia Vega gets deflected to Delaney Whittet, she says “Thank you” and nets the ball from 8 yards out for the final score. On the other end of the field Mira Costa’s goalie Nicole Raventos had a quiet afternoon. Nicole had to handle the ball only once throughout the second half. Credit goes to another solid performance by the Mustangs defense. The next Mira Costa pre season game is on Thursday in El Segundo at 3 p.m. where the Mustangs have a score to settle. Should be a fun game to watch.
