The Mira Costa Mustangs traveled for their last pre league game of the season to neighboring El Segundo. It is a very successful campaign for the Mustangs so far. A pre league record of 9-1 and a ranking in the top 3 amongst all High School teams in California (MaxPrep) raises this years expectations for Varsity. Costa is also the favorite going into this game but not at all an easy one. The El Segundo Eagles beat the Mustangs in their last match up after a 2:2 tie in a penalty shot out at the South Torrance Tournament.
With Viviana Villacorta out on ODP duties Katharine Rogerson started next to Mady Emerson as a central defender. Genevieve Watson moved up to a central midfield position, pairing up with her sister Hanna. The Mustangs started with their usual possession style game and where eager to get on the scoreboard early. So in the 18th minute some good ball distribution through midfield with the ball played wide to Delaney Whittet. A well placed cross in the box to an open Whitney Davis and it is 1:0 for Mira Costa. What followed was a game mostly played in the El Segundo half of the field. The Eagles where concentrating on defending and waiting for their chance to counter attack. That chance came in the 30th minute and with the first shot on goal it is 1:1. Only 6 minutes later then an energetic Emmie Farber follows up on her own shot to give the Mustangs the lead at half time.
The second half then the same picture, Mira Costa with about 70% ball possession but little to be accounted for in the first 30 minutes. The Eagles attack at this point is almost non existent. The score stays 2:1 until the 36 minute when Michaila Franklin outruns her opponent, picks up her head and passes the ball quickly to Delaney Whittet for a one on one with the Eagles goalie, 3:1 for the Mustangs. Just 2 minutes later Delaney’s pass finds Allison Roth for her first goal of the year, a well placed shot in the upper right corner of the net. That sums it up for the day, a 4:1 win and a successful pre league run for the Mustangs. The first league game will be played on Tuesday, January 12th at Waller Stadium against Palos Verdes.
