Varsity Beats Rival Redondo HS 1-0 in Final Game of the Season and Qualify for CIF, JV wins 2-1, F/S loss 0-1

Unknown-39Senior Day at Waller Stadium got off to a great start and only got better for the Costa girls with a hard fought 1-0 victory over arch rival Redondo to secure second place in the ultra-competitive Bay League. On a 80 plus degree day without a cloud in the sky, Senior Day started with Coach Patty Perkinson handing out roses to the 10 seniors on Redondo, a truly classy gesture by the Costa squad. The coaches then took some time to honor our 7 seniors that have all been in the soccer program 4 years:

· Kristen Reed
· Hailey Kay
· Arielle Sheres
· Reilly Edmonds
· Gillian Henry
· McKenna Doyle
· Nonie Frishette

After the pomp and circumstances, the senior clan of Nonie, Reilly, Gillian, McKenna and Hailey led the team onto the field. Unlike the first match, Costa got off to a quick start, only to be followed by Redondo taking control of the action for the early stages of the first half. Costa’s pressure picked up and in the 25thminute, McKenna found a streaking Delaney Whittet who fought through one defender and placed the ball in the back of the net. Costa’s superb defense lead by Reilly, Gillian, Olivia Vega and Caroline Keever kept Costa up at half time.

Costa’s seniors again led the team onto the field in the second half which started with a flurry of near misses. Maya Serota had the best chance in the very early stages but just sailed the ball over the net. Redondo, however, fighting for their own seniors, was not going away and had two shots hit off the cross bar. Costa struck back with a rocket from Vivianna Villacorta in the 35th minute off the cross bar, quickly followed by McKenna’s header that Redondo’s goalie secured by the end of her fingertips. However, at the end of the day, Nonie Frishette pitched yet another shut out to secure a victory for Costa in its last regular season game of the 2015 season.

Costa now rides a four game win streak into the CIF playoffs which start on Thursday.
