Varsity loses to El Segundo in Penalty Kicks

Mira Costa- El Segundo 12.12.15 3:30 p.m.
In the second game of the day Mira Costa ( 5-0-0) met up in the semi finals with the High School team of neighboring city El Segundo. Last time these 2 teams met back in January it was a one sided affair and a 6 :0 win for the Mustangs. So the Costa the clear favorite going into todays game. But already in the 2nd minute El Segundo showed how dangerous they are on counter attacks when given the opportunity. Throughout the first half it was the usual Mira Costa style play controlling the game through a strong midfield and possession play. When moving the ball quickly through the final third the Mustangs created good scoring opportunities attacking on both sided of the field. But a good dispositioned El Segundo goalkeeper Taylor Igoe made some key safes that kept El Segundo in the game until half time. It was Junior Emelie Flaig then in the 4th minute of the second half reacting first to a loose ball in front of the El Segundo goal to make it 1:0 for the Mustangs. Just 5 minutes later a beautiful cross from Allison Roth in front of the goal that let to an indirect free kick 5 yards in front of the El Segundo goal. The shot by Kendall Douglas was blocked by a determined El Segundo defense let by senior Nedi Saltana. The Mustangs kept creating plenty of scoring opportunities and in the 23rd minute of the second half Viviana Villacorta charged through midfield, setting herself up for a long range shot to make it 2:0 Costa. But this game was far from over and the El Segundo Eagles came back within 4 minutes to benefit from quick counter attacking play and scores by Cate Post and Carlie Brasher. Despite a late effort by the Mustangs to push for another score the game ended 2:2 in regulation time and went to penalty kicks. The first safe by goalie freshman Nicole Raventos was answered by the Eagles with 2 safes and some needed luck to decide the penalty kicks in their favor . So it is the 3rd place game for the Mira Costa Mustangs on Monday evening against Redondo.
