Varsity Sweeps West Ranch in South Holiday Tournament

Mira Costa – West Ranch 12.12.15 8 a.m.

In Saturday’s quarter final game Mira Costa played against West Ranch High that came all the way from Santa Clarita for this early morning game. Mira Costa took an early lead in the 4th minute. Emi Farber received the ball at the 18 yard box and nicely placed her shot in the far left corner. From there on it was all Mira Costa, keeping most of the ball possession throughout the first half. It was not until the 12th minute when West Ranch crossed the middle line for the first time but never could seriously threaten the Costa defense throughout the first half. Costa kept peppering the West Ranch goal with shots from Viviana Villacorts, Emi Farber, Hanna Watkins and Allison Roth. In the 25th minute a clear penalty on Viviana Villacorta, her penetrating the penalty box from the left but ruled an advantage play by the referee. Better in the 34 minute , corner from Olivia Vega that hit the crossbar, Villacorta picks up the wide rebound on the right and her cross finds Hanna Watkins. Hanna’s header sailed just wide the goalpost. So only a 1 :0 lead for Costa at half time despite controlling the game and having plenty of scoring opportunities.
In the 5th minute of the second half the first real chance for West Ranch off a corner kick but nicely saved by freshman goalie Nicole Raventos. Just one minute later a free kick by Hanna Watkins but again saved by the West Ranch goalie on the line. Left back Caroline Keever was pushing up more now to support the offense, penetrating the final third down the left side and combining for good some good play with Kendall Douglas . Then in the 19th minute again good midfield play by the Mustangs, passing the ball to the right side and a nice pass by Whitney Davis that finds Delaney Whittet in the penalty box for a clean finish, 2:0 for Costa. Just 12 minutes later it is Hanna Watkins that finds the back of the net from 25 yards out for the final score of the game, it is 3:0 Costa. Overall Costa had 15 shots on goal versus High Ranch’s 4 shots. Well deserved win for Costa in a one sided game.
