Victory in First Round CIF Game Against La Habra 2-1

Costa girls started their run in the CIF Playoffs with an impressive 2-1 victory over La Habra. While it can be said in soccer a lot, the score was not a reflection of the game and Costa’s dominance, especially in the second half did not show up on the score board.

As has been the case many times this season, Costa was led by its prolific scorer McKenna Doyle notching an impressive brace. At the 16th minute of the first half, McKenna received a long ball from Olivia Vega and took off towards the goal. Coming in from a tough angle McKenna was able to slip the ball past a leaning goalie on the short side. While not being able to notch another goal, Costa held strong at half led by Reilly Edmond’s terrific deflection to prevent a dangerous La Habra opportunity.

The second half was all Costa. Costa had about a dozen terrific opportunities, but was just unable to find the net. McKenna and Hannah Watkins peppered the goalie with shot after shot, but La Habra’s goalie stood tall. Frankly, there were so many chances that they all can’t be listed.

Despite never amounting much of an attack, La Habra was finally awarded a corner kick two minutes from Costa’s celebration. As “luck” and the soccer gods would have it, La Habra converted its only second half opportunity to level the score at 1.

Not to be deterred, Costa immediately fought back and the game winner resulted from Hannah’s flick pass to McKenna who in turned delicately slipped the ball past the goalie for the game winner trickling into the goal. Fifteen seconds later, the center referee blew his whistle to end the game to a collective sigh of relief.

Costa’s next game is against Chaparral on Tuesday in Temecula.
